Preparing the Way – Matthew 3: 1-17
Key Verses: 16-17 16 As soon as Jesus was baptized, he went up out of the water. At that moment heaven was opened, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting on him. 17 And a voice from heaven said, “This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased.”
We see January as a time for new beginnings, and why not, it is a new year. In this week’s lesson Jesus himself experienced a new beginning. He was baptised by John the Baptist and couple of amazing things happened. Jesus had a profound moment, not only did he receive his Spiritual SatNav from God but he also heard His Father say that He loved him and He is pleased with him.
Jesus’ baptism marked the beginning of his ministry. What new beginnings do we have in mind? Are we making a conscious decision to get closer to Jesus, to put our faith and trust in him? Jesus was not baptised because he sinned, he was setting an example for us to follow as a way to salvation. John the Baptist prepared the way for Jesus,1 In those days John the Baptist came, preaching in the wilderness of Judea 2 and saying, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven has come near.” 3 This is he who was spoken of through the prophet Isaiah: “A voice of one calling in the wilderness, ‘Prepare the way for the Lord, make straight paths for him.’” In the same way God calls us to prepare the way for others to get to know Jesus.
Have a blessed week
